It’s so hard to believe summer is almost here again! As cliche as it sounds, it feels like just yesterday last summer was starting, and now here we are, a year later. In honor of summer’s quick approach, I’ve put together some of the ways I like to prepare for summer.
Make a Summer Bucket List
I don’t know what it is about summer, but I always feel the need to make a summer bucket list. I never feel like making a spring or winter bucket list, but as soon as summer comes around I’m all about doing new things. The weather is just so nice outside all the time (if not a little too hot sometimes) and it gets me in the mood to mix things up and not just do what I always do.
Take some time, preferably while sitting outside, drinking lemonade and eating strawberries, and write down all of the things I want to do while the weather is so perfect and summer-y. I’ve found when I want to do new and exciting things, the best way to do them is to not try to put too much down. That way you can check everything off the bucket list by the end of the summer.
Some things you could put on your bucket list would be:
- Go on a weekend getaway
- Read a number of books
- Spend the day outside (go to a park, the beach, etc.)
- Spend a day in bed
- Have a backyard BBQ
- Go somewhere new
Make a Summer Goals List
On the same note, don’t just make a list of the fun stuff. Take the summer as a chance to get things done and make the most of your time. I always feel like the summer is a chance to get a new start. The weather is good, and there’s nothing quite like knowing you can sit outside and just get to work. Tackle that outdoor project you’ve always wanted to get done, spend time training your dog, whatever it is just do something you’ve been wanting to do for a while! Gone are the days of just wanting to stay inside and escape from the cold.
This summer, my family will be building a deck outside and not only will something my parents have been talking about doing for years be done, but also once it’s done we’ll be able to sit outside and enjoy the time in the nice weather.
Get a Couple of New Bathing Suits
Nothing screams summer quite like a new bathing suit. I always go through stages of buying things and at one point my obsession was bathing suits. Back in high school I would spend hours shopping for bathing suits and end up with more suits than I could possibly wear. It seemed like every trip to the store would end in a new suit. Then, every time I went on a trip I would over-pack bathing suits and end up wearing maybe three of the eight I had packed. To this day I still own some of the bathing suits I had when I was younger. They kind of still fit, but I think some part of me is just hoping at one point they will start fitting again.
I’ve since lost the need to buy an outrageous amount of bathing suits each year, but I’m still a strong believer that you can’t start your summer off without purchasing at least one new bathing suit (possibly even two). Spend some time looking online and in store for your perfect summer suit. I love how the styles change so much from year to year but that you can always re-wear old suits along with the new ones. I’ve put a couple of my favorite suits I’ve seen so far this year below, because let’s be honest, you can never actually have too many bathing suits.
Plan a Weekend Getaway
If there’s anything that should be on your to do list, it’s plan a weekend getaway! No matter where you live, there’s always somewhere new and exciting not that far away. Check out AirBNB for a weekend place, get together some friends, and just go! One of the benefits of staying at an AirBNB is you can bring more people than you would be able to if staying in a hotel and you can get a place with a fridge and stove. That way you can split the price and cook some of your own meals (saving money!). I love travelling and would rather spend less on each trip and in turn be able to go on even more trips.
I would also 100 percent recommend trying to find a place near the ocean or a lake, if possible. Leaving so close to the beach, I know how good it can feel to just get away for the weekend and spend the day by the water. You can lounge around, hop in the water when it gets too hot, and then go right back to lounging. Plus, it would be the perfect time to wear those cute new bathing suits you spent time getting!
Grab Your Essentials
The beginning of summer is the perfect time to grab all of the summer items you ran out of over the past year. Sunscreen expires, so I always like to pick up a new bottle at the start of summer. I also like to grab a new towel if my old one is fading from too much sun, and some self tanner (no sun cancer for me!). I wrote a post about summer trip essentials that you can check out here if you need some suggestions for other things to get at the store. These are all of the things I never want to forget when going on vacation, but also just the things you’ll want to have around for all your summer needs.
There’s no better feeling than the one you’ll have when you start the summer with your beach or pool bag packed and ready to go. That way you can decide to pick up and go on a moment’s notice. If you grab all the stuff you need before you need it, you’ll never have to worry about spending time packing up and possibly forgetting something.
Summer is such a fun season! Be sure to leave your summer essentials and must do’s in the comments below!
