As we get ready to transition from summer to fall I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about how I organize my clothes. There’s nothing worse than knowing you have clothes to wear, but not actually being able to find them or wear them and organizing your closet will definitely help with that.
I like to hang up as much clothing as I can, depending on the space available. My reason for this is when clothes are hung up it’s so easy to go through and actually see what I have to wear. Sometimes I feel like my drawers are bottomless holes no matter how well or often I organize them. When I’m at home, just about everything I own is hung up.
I like to organize my clothes by sleeve length because a lot of times what I’ll wear depends on whether or not a I want to wear a strapless bra (haha) or what the people around me are wearing. I find that by putting clothes in order of sleeve length it makes it easier to pick out outfits based on weather, occasion and what’s available. It also makes it easier to always know what’s around.
Summer to Winter Transition
Living in Florida, summer to winter transition can be a unique thing all its own. For those of you who do not live in Florida, it stays about 90 degrees well after what seems like the rest of the country. Then eventually, it’ll get chilly, but only in the mornings at first. What this means is a lot of layering. I tend to keep my winter clothes packed up until the last possible moment. It seems like every year as soon as I think it’s safe to transition it heats up again.
I avoid that problem, I’ve started to slowly transition. I’ll put away a few of my shortest sleeve outfits and pull out a couple with long sleeves. I’ll slowly keep doing this until I’m mostly left with t-shirts, sweaters and long sleeves. Until that point though I always have cardigans, jeans and sweatshirts available.
The best way to organize shoes is to make sure you can always see your options. That way you can pick the best shoes for any outfit and never fall into saying “drats, I forgot about those”. I have a shoe hanger in the back of my closet and put my heels on a shelf where they are easily accessible. When winter comes and it’s time to wear boots I tend to keep them on the floor or above my head on the shelving.
I tried having a shoe rack for a while and found they are difficult to keep organized and shelving tends to work better for me.
And finally, shelves. As you’ve probably gathered, I’m not a fan of clutter. I like to keep everything neat and hidden. A lot of times I use baskets on my shelf to hid things and because they keep things more organized.
I hope you enjoyed reading how I organize my closet and I would love to hear your input as well 🙂
