I wanted to put off writing this post until I had a job. I’ve tried to be as transparent as possible throughout the job applying process, but also didn’t want to share too much. Applying for jobs was a stressful, discouraging thing for me and something I wanted to keep between my closest friends and family. I didn’t want to talk about how many interviews I had or how many jobs I applied for. Because let me tell you, it was a lot. I felt for several months like my entire life was consumed by job searching. And I hated every minute of it. Now though, I’ve found a place to start. I hope my job application story (and admitting to just how many interviews I’ve had) will help someone else who’s going through the same thing I did.
Where I Started
I started applying for jobs somewhere around the end of September, beginning of October. My initial plan was to stay in Orlando and work there. I didn’t really plan to stay with Disney from the beginning, but I was interested in event planning in the Orlando area. Since Orlando is such a huge event hub, I figured finding a job wouldn’t be that hard. I was wrong. Because there are so many people who work in the hospitality industry, all of the jobs I applied for seemed to have me as one in a million applicants.
Around the end up October, I had an interview at a company that was advertising event planning. I went in for two interviews and quickly determined the job was not what I thought it was. I would have spent the majority of my time selling products in stores such as Sam’s Club. It was a very different job than what I was looking for and I decided to turn it down before what would have been my third and final interview.
My applying for jobs continued on unsuccessfully for the following month. In December I decided I wanted to consider moving back home to the Tampa bay area or to Gainesville. After I made this decision, things turned around for me in a way. I started going to approximately 2 interviews per week, either in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Gainesville. You can assume every time I mentioned going home or going to Gainesville or taking a quick day trip it was because I was going to an interview. I spent what felt like just about every day I had off going to an interview somewhere and I even went to two interviews with the flu.
In total, I applied for 70 jobs and had a minimum of 20 interviews. It was a lot and by the end I was just so ready to be DONE!
Where I Ended Up
I am currently working as a concierge on the beach. This is by no means my dream job, but it’s a start. It’s giving me the time I need to figure out what I want to do next.
In addition to this, I am in the process of planning two weddings for 2018. I am hoping to use these two weddings to jump start a wedding planning business. I am working with my brides to make their dream day exactly what they want it to be. There are meetings with vendors, designing, budget planning and more. We’re still in the beginning stages, but I know it will only continue to be more and more fun as I get closer to the actual wedding days.
I’m working hard to figure out what I want to do next. This growing up thing is not as easy as I thought it would be. Stay tuned, there’s more to come!
